Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of the Nursing & Midwifery Council’s (NMC’s) Assurance Advisory Group for the Test of Competence (ToC).
As the professional regulator of nurses and midwives in the UK and nursing associates in England, we are proud to work with these dedicated practitioners to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to deliver consistent, quality care that keeps the public safe.
The ToC is just one part of our work to protect the public and encourage professional excellence amongst our registrant community, but it is a significant one, and it is vitally important that we get it right. A two-part test for overseas applicants and those looking to re-join the register, the first element is a computer-based theory test, while the second is a practical assessment that looks at the clinical skills needed to be a nurse, midwife, or nursing associate in the UK.
We are incredibly excited to now be recruiting a pool of clinical, academic and lay experts who will help us oversee the application and delivery of the ToC. Regardless of their background and experience, the Group Members will work together to offer insight on the ToC from multiple perspectives – practitioner, educator, public, and patient. Based on the breadth of their collective experience, the Group will enrich the conversation around training and standards, provide constructive challenge, and work collaboratively in the best interest of the ToC to ensure it is robust yet fair, and in line with latest best practice.
The Group Members will share the NMC’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, and will be as passionate as we are about promoting a culture that encourages professionals to be open and learn from mistakes, that gives the public an equal voice, and where everyone involved is treated with kindness and understanding.
The Assurance Advisory Group is a new addition to our approach to monitoring and reviewing the ToC. We want to ensure that both members of the nursing and midwifery professions and the general public are at the heart of what we at the NMC do, and have the opportunity to play their part ensuring the ToC is applied and delivered to the very best possible standard.
I wish you all the success in your application.
